Read the first half of Leaf by Niggle. It is very short.
A small painter with one enormous picture in his head manages, in a whole lifetime of interruptions, to finish exactly one leaf. Tolkien wrote it about himself and about the Legendarium he was sure he would never complete. Anyone who has a thing they are not getting to will recognise the man immediately.
